Bridging the wired/ wireless network divide with Rajant’s new SlipStream

In a move to speed the transfer of data between traditional wired networks and the Rajant Corporation’s patented Kinetic Mesh private wireless networks, the vendor has launched SlipStream, a network node incorporating a high speed processor designed to provide a high throughput interface between the two infrastructures.
Distributed in South Africa by Duxbury Networking, Slipstream allows data to traverse the wired/wireless boundary at rates of several hundred megabytes per second.
“SlipStream is designed to integrate with existing wired infrastructures and eliminate potential ingress and egress bottlenecks,” explains Teresa Huysamen, Wireless Business Unit manager at Duxbury Networking.
“As applications are added to today’s networks, the types and volumes of data can grow dramatically. For example, applications such as video surveillance can make significant demands on the connections between legacy wired and modern mesh networks as the number of video sources and viewers increases,” she says, adding that Slipstream allows users to access and transfer vital information at high speed without sacrificing network performance and reliability.
According to Huysamen, organisations looking to deploy new wireless mesh networks or planning to expand the capabilities of existing mesh networks will benefit from the incorporation of SlipStream nodes.
“By accelerating the flow of data across the wired network/mesh boundary, they provide network operators with greater flexibility to construct or expand wireless networks in order to meet a wider range of future requirements.”
In addition to Rajant’s Slipstream nodes assuming responsibility for bridging the wired/ mesh network divide, they also perform encryption or decryption tasks to ensure secure delivery of data, voice and video traffic.
Key features of the Rajant SlipStream node include a powerful CPU devoted to Kinetic Mesh encapsulation and decapsulation as well as support for several strong cryptographic options used for data and MAC-address encryption and per-hop, per-packet authentication.
Working in concert with other Rajant nodes and the vendor’s Automatic Protocol Tunnelling (APT) functionality, SlipStream allows network operators to establish multiple Layer-2 connection points between the wired network and mesh networks thus increasing capacity while eliminating single points of failure.
Slipstream, powered by Rajant’s Instamesh patented protocol, enables a network to adapt to rapidly deployed and quickly- or constantly-moving network elements. It is self-configuring for fast and easy deployments.
