New business-class desktop storage with updated operating system from Netgear

Netgear is expanding its ReadyNAS 420 Series of network-attached storage (NAS) products with the addition of new 6- and 8-bay units designed to extend the performance and scalability of its current 2- and 4- bay configured units.
The new six-bay model (RN426) supports up to 60TB of storage while the 8-bay model (RN428) supports up to 80TB of storage.
The new offerings feature the latest version of Netgear’s ReadyNAS operating system – OS 6.7 – as well as ReadyCLOUD, a unified storage platform for seamless file sharing, and ReadyDR, a new backup and disaster recovery solution.
According to Tobie van Schalkwyk, Netgear business development manager at Duxbury Networking – the local Netgear distributor – the new operating system is based on Linux 4 and provides a complete, reliable and cost-effective backup platform for company files, databases and virtual machines.
“ReadyNAS OS 6.7 offers new enterprise-level capabilities such as automatic bi-directional synchronisation between any ReadyNAS model and public cloud storage services including Amazon AWS, Amazon Cloud Drive, Dropbox and Google Drive,” he says. “It is an ideal hybrid cloud solution for small businesses to back up and synchronise on-site storage to cloud storage – and vice-versa.”
In addition to supporting connections to popular public cloud services, Van Schalkwyk says ReadyCLOUD provides – at no additional cost – an instant, secure VPN-based personal cloud for local and remote data access for file sharing and synchronisation.
The new ReadyNAS OS also automatically installs ReadyDR which is designed to ensure business continuity with minimal downtime in the event of catastrophic data loss.
“ReadyDR performs incremental and scheduled block-level backup and restore to a second compatible ReadyNAS, ensuring LAN replication of even the largest backup files and databases,” explains Van Schalkwyk.
“Together, ReadyCLOUD and ReadyDR safeguard data through five levels of protection,” he adds. “These include automatic XRAID protection against disk failure while maximising drive capacity utilisation, snapshot technology that restores data from any point in time, built-in, real-time anti-virus and anti-malware software without performance degradation, bit rot protection against media degradation and an easy-to-set up, backup-based on block-level replication technology.”
