Netgear reveals new, advanced switches with innovative mounting system

Two new Netgear web-managed switches featuring an innovative universal mounting system have been released by local distributor Duxbury Networking. They are designed to give IT managers greater control over denser deployments of Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) devices including wireless access points.
“The new switches are geared to support deployments of modern high-power, PoE+ devices in locations where other switches cannot go,” says Tobie van Schalkwyk, Netgear Business Development manager at Duxbury Networking.
“As the adoption of wireless devices using PoE+ power becomes more pervasive, so the placement of these devices will present an increasing challenge to the PoE switches supplying their power,” he says.
“VoIP phones, IP security cameras with night vision and motion tracking, wireless access points, proximity sensors, LED lighting, door locks and other PoE-powered devices are typically spread throughout business premises for optimal coverage, surveillance and density management, making them difficult to deploy efficiently from a centralised IT room.”
The new ProSAFE 8-port Gigabit Ethernet Web Managed PoE+ Click Switch (GSS108EPP) and the ProSAFE Easy-Mount 8-port Gigabit Ethernet PoE+ Web Managed Switch (GS408EPP) support Netgear’s Virtually Anywhere mounting system which offers flexibility in placement, allowing PoE+ ports to be available where they are needed.
Van Schalkwyk says the Virtually Anywhere system – a ‘first’ for Netgear – allows for vertical, horizontal, flat or perpendicular placement of the switches. “Whether it’s on the wall, strapped to a pole, or under a desk or table-top, Netgear’s mounting system assists network managers to control and optimise the deployment of PoE+ ports and cables.”
He says Netgear understands the importance of providing network managers with a flexible network that can adapt to evolving business needs, instead of being at the mercy of inconvenient PoE connections where space is at a premium.
Focusing on Netgear’s GS408EPP switch, Van Schalkwyk says its design allows for two switches to be mounted in a single 1U rack slot, saving rack space while allowing for future expansion as needed.
“As both the Ethernet ports and the power cable connection are on the same side of this Easy-Mount switch, two GS408EPP switches can fit back-to-back, for 16 PoE+ ports in a single 1U rack slot with a total PoE power budget of 124W per switch. More ports can be added as needed without wasting additional valuable rack space,” he explains.
Key features of the GS408EPP Easy-Mount Switch include 8x Gigabit Ethernet PoE+ ports (124W total PoE power) to enable connection of up to 7x PoE+ (802.3af and 802.3at) devices (one port for uplink).
Principal features of the GSS108EPP Click Switch include 4x PoE+ ports (47W total) to enable connection of up to 4 PoE/PoE+ (802.3af and 802.3at) devices and 3x additional non-PoE devices (one port for uplink).
As part of the Netgear’s ProSAFE Web Managed (Plus) Switch product family, both switches offer a range of fundamental management characteristics based on simpler configuration and deployment through a web browser-based management GUI. These include:
•    Advanced per port PoE controls for remote power management of PoE connected devices.
•    Advanced VLAN support for traffic segmentation including port-based and 802.1Q-based.
•    Advanced QoS (Quality of Service) for traffic prioritisation including port-based and 802.1p/DSCP-based.
•    Auto denial-of-service (DoS) prevention.
•    IGMP snooping support for multicast optimisation.
•    Rate limiting and priority queuing for better bandwidth allocation.
•    Port mirroring for network monitoring.
•    Energy Efficient Ethernet (IEEE 802.3az) for maximum power savings.
