Fixed wireless network operators offer 5G-like connections

One of the first commercially available products to feature cnMedusa technology – Cambium Networks’ PMP450m fixed wireless access platform – is now available from local distributor Duxbury Networking. Optimised for reach, reliability and throughput in a compact form factor, the PMP450m is targeted at point to point enterprise access, video surveillance and backup connection services.
The PMP450m is a Massive Multi-User, Multiple-input Multiple-output (MU-MIMO) platform featuring multiplied capacity and high spectrum efficiency, designed to enable network operators to offer 5G-like Internet connections to an increasing number of users.
Andy Robb, chief technology officer at Duxbury Networking says the introduction of cnMedusa technology marks a shift in the way people will deploy wireless networks.
“As wireless networks evolve to become as fast as wired ones, Massive Multi-User MIMO allows fixed wireless network operators to offer industry-leading cost, scalability and reach advantages – particularly in traditionally underserved areas – with speeds and reliability levels that often exceed wired networks. This capability allows people in nearly any location, including the many rural areas in southern Africa, to experience media-rich content.”
Robbs says that with speeds comparable to fibre, the PMP450m wireless broadband platform will assist network operators meet demand for streaming media services like Netflix while giving them support for the symmetric traffic required by cloud-based services.
“The technology in the PMP450m offers a three-to-four-times increase in network capacity with more than 400 Mbps in a 20 MHz channel and ground-breaking spectral efficiency of 20+ bits per second per Hz, and over 40 bps/Hz when deployed in frequency re-use configurations,” explains Robb, who adds that the PMP450m is able to be managed from a “single pane of glass in the cloud”.
Key features of the Cambium Networks PMP450m platform include a 14×14 integrated antenna array that exceeds the requirements of both the 802.11AC Wave 2 and LTE-A standards, with yields capable of supporting up to seven simultaneous carrier chains.
“The unprecedented spectral efficiency of the cnMedusa-enabled PMP450m now allows wireless service providers to offer triple play services to existing and new customers without requiring additional scarce and expensive spectrum. This will assist service providers to deliver ultra-broadband services to outdoor deployments that would previously be difficult to reach,” adds Robb.
